Jaisalmer is the golden
city of the desert. It has an interesting history founded in 1156
A.D. Its desert fort, which resembles a gigantic sandcastle, is
straight out of 'The Thousand and One Nights'. This remote desert
citadel is famous for its carved havelis, cobbled streets and
ancient Jain temples. There are many havelis which can be found
elsewhere in Rajasthan, but nowhere are they quite as exquisite as
in Jaisalmer. Even the humblest shops and houses display something
of the Rajput love of the decorative arts. Other areas of interest
are gadsisar lake, royal cenotaphs at bada bagh, lodurva, the sand
dunes at sam and the fossil park.
